Birds
What are pest birds?
Pest birds flock together in large numbers, and can become problematic for commercial property owners. They are difficult to control and eliminate. Pest birds are a health and safety concern for both customers and employees. One of the most common and problematic species of pest birds are pigeons.
Adult pigeons grow to between 11 and 12 ½ inches in length. There are color variations between specific species, but in general they have light gray bodies and darker heads, shoulders, and breasts. Some may have rust or metallic-colored feathers across their breasts, necks, and heads. They have two distinct, dark bars that cross their wings, and a dark bar going across their tails. Their beaks are grayish-pink in color.
Are pest birds dangerous?
Pest birds can be dangerous to have living on your commercial property and roosting on your commercial building. They can cause structural damage to siding, equipment, ventilation fans, and machinery. Their droppings cause wooden structures to age faster and steel buildings to degrade faster. They get into trash cans and create unsightly and unsanitary messes. Their droppings are unsightly, carry disease, and may cause fungal growth, which can lead to the spread of even more disease. Finally, their droppings can be slippery, and could potentially cause slips and falls outside your business.
Why do I have a pest bird problem?
Pest birds in Kansas are found living, feeding, and breeding in a wide variety of environments, including suburban, urban, and rural areas. They are attracted to commercial buildings that offer large roof spaces where they can perch comfortably. Pest birds are drawn to commercial properties with outdoor eating areas, gardens, compost piles, and dumpsters, which all offer food.
Where will I find pest birds?
Outside, pest birds build nests in trees, shrubs, bushes, and rock crevices. They also commonly build nests on buildings underneath eaves, in gutters, or in and around chimneys. If pest birds find their way inside your commercial facility, they may create their nests in rafters, attics, storage rooms, behind walls voids, and in other similar and safe out-of-the-way locations.
